Patrick Mahomes is facing a first in his career — three consecutive losses, including the Super Bowl, after the Kansas City Chiefs’ 20-17 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
Kansas City entered the fourth quarter down by three but still had a chance to pull off another trademark Mahomes comeback. Instead, a costly drop by Travis Kelce led to a red-zone interception, and the Eagles capitalized with a touchdown that sealed the game.
The Chiefs’ 0-2 start is their first since 2014, and offensive struggles are a clear factor. Kansas City’s points per game have dropped steadily since 2022, from a league-leading 29.2 to just 21.8 last season. This year, they’re averaging only 19.
A big reason is roster construction. The Chiefs are spending near the bottom of the league on wide receivers and running backs, while allocating top-dollar to tight ends and the offensive line units that have delivered mixed results. Kelce, still one of the NFL’s highest-paid tight ends, is coming off his least productive season, and the offensive line continues to allow pressure while failing to spark the run game.
Mahomes is currently Kansas City’s leading rusher, underscoring the lack of production from the backfield. The team has invested significant draft capital and money into the offense, but so far the returns have been underwhelming, leaving the unit heavily reliant on Mahomes’ playmaking.
Despite the poor start, Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid expressed confidence that the team can turn things around. “I know it sucks to hear for the fans, but I feel like we’re close,” Mahomes said.
